Here’s something that’s annoyed me… at some point in the 48 hours since it premiered on Sunday night, the reaction to Lena Dunham’s new show Girls has turned exceptionally nasty. Not “Hey, I didn’t like this show” nasty, but more like “I’m going to use Facebook and Tumblr and Twitter to tear…

Amen.

I don’t totally agree with everything Alex Fernie is dishing out, and that’s hard to say because we once shared a camper in the middle of the desert. As much as critics are allowed to love or hate a show so are the viewers. I’m surprised it took this long for the backlash to start. When you have a show that is about four 20 something year old girls living in NYC and the opening scene involves one of them being told by their parents they have to pay their own way through life after having everything taken care of (rent, phone bill, etc.), you’re going to get a ton of backlash. I for one was immediately turned off and annoyed, because as much as we want to say that the line, “I’m a voice of my generation,” was a joke, guess what, people won’t take it as one, including the generations above us and the generations below us. Why does this piss people off (and obviously me), because some of us have to earn our own livings paying for everything ourselves (rent, phone bill, etc.), and being compared to people like the ones in this show is very frustrating. I’m not saying it’s wrong to have your parents take care of some things, I’m just saying some people don’t like to be compared to others who have, which happens far too often.

However, to hate on a show that you haven’t seen because of nepotism is pretty ridiculous. As a filmmaker with no family members in “the business” it is hard to see people get to high places in part because of their parents. Honestly though, it’s the world we live in. If anything, you should use it as motivation to get off your ass and work harder then ever before. Then one day you can get your own tv show and say you did it all through hard work and your parents had nothing to do with it, then a twitter fight will start between you and the cast of girls and everyone can sit back, watch, and enjoy. Let’s also not condemn these actresses because of their parents. Some of them are actually pretty talented.
